44. Blur, Sing (1991)

I've written about the Blur reunion for The Guardian today, and I was reminded by a friend, and then a blog poster, about this fantastic track of theirs. There's something about its bassline, and those seductive, building guitars, that just won't let me go.

My half-empty mind has made an unfortunate connection between the ‘spring in its step’ piano that commences ‘Madness’s cover of ‘It Must Be Love’ and the monotonous downbeat piano-led opening of ‘Sing’.

I now imagine both songs as being written from the perspective of the same person, with the latter taking place five years on from the former, when all hopes and dreams have been cruelly dashed.
